AIRoA

R&D-021 Full Stack Engineer

Location: Heiwajima, Tokyo, Japan
Division: On-site Development Division
Type: Full time

Overview

AIRoA (AI Robot Association) is launching a groundbreaking initiative to collect one million hours of humanoid robot operation data with hundreds of robots, leveraging it to train the worldʼs most powerful Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models. AIRoA stands out through the unprecedented scale of real-world data and platforms, and its commitment to an open, accessible robot data ecosystem, where datasets, trained models, and benchmarks are publicly available. Researchers can evaluate their models on standardized humanoid robots through an open evaluation platform.

Opportunities include:

  • Working on fundamental challenges in robotics and AI (multimodal learning, tactile-rich manipulation, sim-to-real transfer, large-scale benchmarking)
  • Access to hundreds of humanoid robots, GPU clusters, high-fidelity simulators, and a global-scale evaluation pipeline
  • Collaboration with leading experts across academia and industry, with opportunities to publish impactful results
  • Contributing to an initiative that will redefine the future of embodied AI, with all results made open to the world

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and implement teleoperation systems, including real‑time control, low‑latency audio/video streaming and operator-facing interfaces.
  • Work closely with robot operators to gather feedback from real‑world use and continuously improve the user experience.
  • Provide data‑quality feedback through the teleoperation UI to encourage higher‑quality data collection.
  • Develop and maintain applications that support data collection, such as internal tools and dashboards.
  • Build intuitive web‑based interfaces for managing and monitoring data pipelines.
  • Collaborate with VLA teams and Data/ML platform teams to ensure seamless data ingestion and workflow management.
  • Design and implement APIs to facilitate data interactions between internal services and external data sources.
  • Develop configuration‑management systems to store and update metadata, including robot configurations and task descriptions.
  • Ensure secure communication through robust authentication and access‑control mechanisms.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 4+ years of professional experience as a full‑stack engineer, with proficiency in both backend and frontend development.
  • Backend: Proficiency in implementing solutions using technologies such as Go and Python FastAPI.
  • Frontend: Proficiency in modern frameworks such as Next.js, React.
  • Cloud: Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP.
  • Leadership: Experience leading and driving technical decisions with initiative as a Tech Lead, Team Lead, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience in at least one of the following areas:
    • A strong understanding of event-driven or real‑time communication protocols (e.g., WebRTC, WebSocket, MQTT, gRPC).
    • Experience with large-scale data processing.
    • Hands-on experience with ROS/ROS2 and related web tools (e.g., ROSBridge, Foxglove, Webviz).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with development micro services.
  • Experience with development of realtime dashboards.
  • Familiarity with robot telemetry, sensor data visualization, and live camera feeds.
  • Experience optimizing system performance using performance analysis tools.
  • DevOps, SRE & Quality Assurance.
  • Familiarity with best practices, including observability, CI/CD, and incident response.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform or CloudFormation.
  • Proficiency in implementing and maintaining automated testing across all levels (unit, integration, E2E).

Others (Linguistic Qualification, etc.)

  • 【Highly appreciated】 English proficiency at business level

Benefits

There are currently no comparable projects in the world that collect data and develop foundation models on such a large scale. As mentioned above, this is one of Japan’s leading national projects, supported by a substantial investment of 20.5 billion yen from NEDO.

This position will play a crucial role in determining the success of the project. You will have broad discretion and responsibility, and we are confident that, if successful, you will gain both a great sense of achievement and the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to society.

Furthermore, we strongly encourage engineers to actively build their careers through this project—for example, by publishing research papers and engaging in academic activities.
