Job Description: Engineering Manager

Background & Traction

We are currently focusing on Lawyers who draft relatively standardized but long documents, such as contracts. With only one year after our product launch, we already have more than 7,500 active paid users. We have several long-term, large-scale contracts with famed enterprises and law firms. As a result, we have been highly profitable from Day 1 and experienced exponential growth without outside funding at all.

We have been accepted by prestigious accelerator programs, including MassChallenge (Top 30 US accelerator), StartX (Stanford Accelerator, 7% acceptance rate), and MIT Sandbox (Accelerator of Massachusetts Institute of Technology).

Technical Challenges We Solve

  • Performance improvement using both partial analysis and full analysis.
  • Synchronization between user input and on-memory text.
  • Cache efficiency to increase highlight performance during/after user input.
  • Security preserving Natural Language Processing, such as Federated Learning.

What You’ll Do

Responsibilities of the Engineering Manager include:

  • Being accountable for technical decisions that your team makes, whether by making the decision yourself or reviewing and approving the decisions made by your team members.
  • Driving your team and project to maximize outcomes in a timely manner under a dynamic and agile environment.
  • Growing your team members by providing incrementally more challenging assignments and ongoing coaching.
  • Creating a psychologically safe environment across the company beyond your local team.

Qualifications

Required

  • At least three of the following:

    • Experienced in managing managers.
    • Skilled in optimizing collaboration and operations by implementing engineering processes or tools.
    • Experienced in assessing team members' performance in collaboration with executives and other managers, and determining their rewards, such as annual bonuses.
    • Experienced in nurturing team members through effective coaching and mentoring support.
    • Experienced in setting team priorities or project direction based on customer feedback and/or marketing data.
    • Experienced in writing tech blogs for public audiences or conducting public speeches to share insights and expertise.
  • Experience managing engineering teams of 5 or more people.

  • Proficiency in coding with either C#, C++, Java, or Rust.

  • Business-level English proficiency.

  • Passion for creating a psychologically safe environment.

  • Effective communication skills to clearly convey ideas to others.

Preferred

  • Master's degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Ability to understand both the customer's and engineer's points of view.
  • Fluency in Japanese.

Visa and Relocation

Our teams are working fully remotely, and we are expanding our global presence. While our headquarters are currently in Japan, relocation to Japan is not mandatory. If you wish to relocate, we are happy to help you obtain a visa.

Working Arrangement

  • Fully remote
    • For employees residing near Tokyo, there may be opportunities to work in person several times a month.
  • Flexible working hours:
    • Flexible time: 6:00 am - 11:30 am / 3:00 pm - 10:00 pm
    • Core time: 11:30 am - 3:00 pm
  • Virtual Office:
    • You'll have the ability to craft a character within a virtual office environment and engage with colleagues through interactive experiences.

  • Location: Home or any other place equivalent to home. There may be commuting to a designated location due to business reasons.
  • Holidays: 5-day workweek (Saturday, Sunday, Public Holidays / End of Year and New Year holidays (set by the company) / others as set by the company).
  • Employment Status: Full-time (fixed overtime pay included). Permanent employment.
  • Probation Period: 6 months.
