Job Title: Distributed Databases DevOps Engineer / LINE Platform

Position Outline

The Distributed Database Operations Engineer for the Messaging Platform and Developer Product Platform is responsible for administrating, operating, and troubleshooting distributed databases under high data volume and traffic—while ensuring high reliability. This role also involves optimizing operational processes, costs, and performance through the development of tools, automations, and workflows.


Job Details

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administration and operational tasks: deploying, restarting, updating databases, etc.
  • Optimize operational processes, costs, and performance by developing tools, automations, Infrastructure as Code, and pipelines.
  • On-call duties, monitoring, troubleshooting, and incident/outage support.
  • Collaborate with SRE (Site Reliability Engineering) / DBRE (Database Reliability Engineering) teams to ensure high reliability.
  • Coordinate with Customer Service, QA, and other teams as needed.

Scope of Change: You may be reassigned to other duties as determined by the company.


Expectations

  • Join the development team as a DevOps member, contribute via daily operations, tool development, and QA duties as needed.
  • Act as a seed member, training and guiding team members towards operating as an independent storage operations team.

  • Works with SRE/DBRE to define and reach reliability standards (SLO), using monitoring and rapid incident response.

Required Experience & Skills

  • DevOps experience.
  • Basic knowledge of infrastructure and networks.
  • Basic knowledge of distributed systems or distributed databases.
  • Experience with server instance automation and maintenance using scripting languages (e.g., Shell, Python, Ruby) and orchestration tools (e.g., Ansible, Chef).
  • Experience with observability (monitoring) tools and best practices.
  • Troubleshooting and critical incident response experience, including root cause and postmortem analysis.
  • System on-call experience.

Language Requirements

  • Intermediate or advanced conversational Japanese.
  • English proficiency for written communication and reporting to developers.

Preferred Experience & Skills

  • Experience operating, solving, and improving large infrastructure/services handling high traffic.
  • Knowledge of SRE concepts and best practices.
  • System performance optimization experience.
  • Experience with BCP/DR planning.

Compensation

  • Annual salary: JPY 6,000,000 – JPY 10,000,000
  • Monthly salary: JPY 400,000 – JPY 667,000
    • Base salary: JPY 309,000 – JPY 518,000
    • Fixed overtime allowance: JPY 90,000 – JPY 150,000 (covers 35 hours; additional overtime paid separately)
  • Bonuses: Up to twice a year, based on company and departmental performance.

  • Remote work environment allowance (JPY 11,000/month)

Type and Period of Employment

  • Type: Permanent employee (no fixed term; 3-month trial period)

Work Location

  • Kioicho Office (Kioi Tower, 1-3 Kioicho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo)
    • Some work may require access to secure rooms; ability to arrive at office within one hour is preferred.
    • Office is wheelchair accessible.
    • Non-smoking indoors (smoking rooms available).

Work Hours

  • Flextime: Standard 7 hours 45 minutes per day, no core hours.
    • Standard hours: 9:30 a.m. – 6:15 p.m.
    • Shortened working hours for childcare/caregiving available.
    • Departmental scheduling may vary.

Holidays and Leave

  • Days Off: Two days per week (typically Saturday/Sunday), national holidays, New Year's holiday (Dec 29–Jan 4)
  • Leave: Paid leave, special paid leave (condolence, maternity, childcare, nursing care, etc.), Happy Friday (compensatory day if public holiday falls on Saturday), sabbatical.
