About the Role

The Database Reliability Engineering (DBRE) team is responsible for building and maintaining reliable, scalable, and cost-efficient database infrastructure enabling core business operations. The team empowers engineering by providing stable access to critical data through TiDB Cloud, ensuring high availability and performance for millions of daily users. This includes CoreDB operations (central DB for items, transactions, users, and critical data), database migrations and consolidations, and ongoing cost and performance optimizations.

This position will lead the DBRE team and be responsible for organizational health, technical strategy, and execution. The manager will guide critical migrations, mentor engineers, and collaborate with partners to ensure the database infrastructure meets business needs.

Work Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership & Management: Manage, mentor, and hire a diverse DBRE team; foster psychological safety, continuous learning, and operational excellence.
  • Technical Strategy & Roadmap: Define and drive the technical vision for the database infrastructure.
  • Reliability & Operations: Oversee the stability of mission-critical DB systems; lead incident response and post-incident reviews.
  • Cost Optimization: Partner with FinOps to drive cost optimization initiatives (shard consolidation, resource right-sizing, etc.).
  • Collaboration: Work closely with Platform Infrastructure, SRE, Observability, and Product teams to align database capabilities with requirements.

Unique Challenges

  • Cloud-Native Transformation: Lead the final stages of migration from an on-premise data center to TiDB Cloud and define the future operational model.
  • Scale & Complexity: Manage large MySQL and TiDB clusters (hundreds of thousands of QPS, tens of TBs of data) with 99.99% availability.
  • Cost vs. Reliability: Optimize costs through strategies and architecture changes without compromising reliability.

Qualifications

Required

  • Alignment with the mission and values of the organization.
  • Experience managing or leading an engineering team (SRE/DBRE/Infrastructure preferred), including hiring, performance management, and development.
  • Strong technical background in database technologies (e.g., MySQL, TiDB, PostgreSQL); deep understanding of DB architecture, performance tuning, and high availability.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (GCP, AWS) and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Ansible).
  • Track record in incident management and post-mortem/RCA processes.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to explain technical risks to non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred

  • Operating large-scale distributed databases (e.g., TiDB, Spanner, Vitess) in production.
  • Experience with FinOps or cloud cost management.
  • Software development background (Go, Python, etc.).
  • Leading major infrastructure migrations (on-prem to cloud, DB engine change).
  • Knowledge of modern SRE practices, SLO/SLI definition, and error budget management.
