Position Overview

As an Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for creating organizational structures, solving organizational issues, and creating a place where engineers can play more active roles. In Mercari's engineering organization, we have members from a variety of backgrounds, and as an Engineering Manager, you will be managing teams with diversified experiences, nationalities, cultures, etc. You will be responsible for drawing out the potential of teams and individuals and producing greater results.

Work Responsibilities

  • Recruit, train, set goals, evaluate, and provide feedback to engineers
  • Maximize the results of engineer members and support their career growth
  • Assign engineers to projects and support the communication needed to carry them out
  • Problem solve for the engineering organization and propose and execute growth strategies
  • Plan and implement in-house events to deepen understanding of expertise and the organization
  • Technology selection, system architecture construction, and review of specification creation
  • Discuss the validity of technical choices with CTOs and tech leads, and contribute to the correct technical growth of organizations and individuals
  • Work with product managers and tech leads to support the success of products

Team Mission

The Mercari Hallo Team is a new team formed in April 2023 to launch a new business in the HR field. In order to embody Mercari's group mission of "circulating all value and expanding the possibilities for everyone," we are providing new value to Mercari users with a focus on "work." This team has great potential and aims to become a major pillar of the Mercari Group. The team will utilize the assets of the Mercari Group to launch a new business from scratch and aim for rapid growth.

Unique Challenges

  • This business is directly linked to Mercari's group mission of "circulating all value and expanding possibilities for everyone."
  • As a new business team launched by a small but elite team, you will be required to play a cross-sectional role in launching the business.
  • Considering a new business based on the huge assets of Mercari, Japan's largest flea market app, is extremely challenging, and if successful, it can have a huge impact.

Required Experience

  • Experience in developing and operating large-scale products
  • Ability to maximize the organization while encouraging the growth of engineers
  • Development experience in technical areas such as backend, infrastructure, and client
  • Engineering management experience
  • High communication skills, such as interdepartmental coordination and mentoring of engineers, and communication skills in English

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to move organizations and projects

Key points for technical assessment

We will conduct a system design interview to check your overall ability, such as how you define the issues you face, what your thought process is and how you communicate with team members to solve them, rather than deep knowledge of specific technologies or frameworks. Specifically, we will check the following points:

  • How do you communicate with the interviewer?
  • If you have any questions about the system requirements, can you ask questions and correctly identify them?
  • How do you approach solving problems that have no correct answer?
  • How do you consider scalability and availability?
  • How do you make decisions when there are trade-offs in solving a problem?
  • What thought process do you go through to improve your idea?
  • Do you understand the problems and areas for improvement in the system?

  • English: Independent (CEFR - B2) required
  • Japanese: Independent (CEFR - B2) required

Employment Status

Full-time

  • Probationary period: First 3 months after joining the company

Annual salary paid in 12 monthly installments (including fixed overtime allowance)
