Description
Mercari Marketplace's Metadata team is responsible for creating structured and high-quality product data (categories, brands, product attributes, and catalog data) to power all core marketplace experiences such as search, recommendations, listing, and price suggestions. Through AI-enabled development, Product Managers lead cross-functional teams from strategic planning to execution and outcome measurement.
You will own the vision, strategy, and delivery for the Metadata area, collaborating closely with engineers, designers, data analysts, and other stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Define the vision, strategy, and roadmap for the metadata platform
- Define the ideal state of each type of metadata, and establish a 1–3 year vision and an actionable roadmap
- Decide priorities tied to business growth based on market/competitive trends and data while building alignment with leadership and related divisions
- Design KPIs and build a monitoring structure
- Continuously improve metadata quality
- Plan concrete improvement initiatives for each type of metadata; partner with project managers and operations teams to design data schemas and deliver them incrementally
- Define metrics for metadata quality and build mechanisms for automated quality improvement using AI and other technologies

- Define mapping policy between acquired data and Mercari's existing master data with relevant teams
- Lead product development
- Coordinate requirements with engineering teams, manage the backlog, and set priorities
- Design and evaluate effectiveness validation; manage releases
- Collaborate with stakeholders

Gemini, Claude, Notion AI, NotebookLM, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Devin, Codex, Gemini Code Assist, n8n, Dify
Unique Challenges
- Mercari’s metadata is fundamental to all core product and user experiences, directly impacting marketplace revenue and new business growth.
- Many areas are still in early stages (“white space”) offering opportunity for foundational impact.
- Design optimal data structures for diverse product groups (e.g., trading cards, home appliances, fashion, anime/games/entertainment), with unique C2C challenges.
- Full ownership beyond data platform: plan and drive in-app experiences, business negotiations, and data procurement.
- Transform a process that is still largely manual by leveraging AI.
