About the Mercari Group

"With the earth's resources limited, what can we do to build a more abundant society?" In 2013, the flea market app "Mercari" was born out of a sense of purpose that founder Shintaro Yamada developed during a trip around the world. We believe that by circulating all forms of value—not limited to physical goods and money—we can expand everyone's options to realize what they want to do and to contribute to people and society.

Through technology, we connect people around the world and work to realize a world in which the potential of all people can be unleashed.

Organization / Team Mission

AI Enablement designs how the Mercari Group builds products next (Mercari AI PDLC: Product Development Life Cycle). Our mission is to convert the Group's product development process into an AI-native one, across the Marketplace, FinTech and Cross-Border businesses.

Our customers are internal: every discipline that works inside the development process—Product Management, Engineering, Design, QA, BI, Marketing, Compliance, and Legal. We work alongside product and engineering teams to turn what works into something the whole Group can rely on.

AI capability changes every quarter. We keep a clear view of what AI can do today, what it will do in 6–12 months, and we plan against both. Team adoption and continued use measure our success.

Under a development structure that assumes AI, we pursue both speed and the maximization of customer value. Product Managers focus on the most important problem discovery (Discovery) and business outcomes (Outcome), moving products forward in an AI-native way.

With AI, the scope of one person's role expands. Small teams can own a whole product area, so we run more of those teams and pursue more customer value at once. Each team owns its area from problem to release and keeps the judgement: what to build and what to ship.

Responsibilities

Hundreds of engineers, product managers, designers, QA engineers and analysts build Mercari's products across several businesses. You will own how they work: the tools they use, the practices they follow, and the processes they run.

You will be tasked with answering: When an agent can write, test and review a significant share of the work, what does the best version of our development process look like, and what has to change to get there? You will work with teams, prove solutions with working software, and embed best practices into how Mercari develops products.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Own the strategy and roadmap for how Mercari builds products

    • Define what AI-native development looks like here: tools, practices, processes, and the order of changes.
    • Decide the next steps using evidence from the teams, market, and your own experiments; align with leadership and function leads.
    • Keep plans live—update them as new evidence arrives and explain what changed.
  2. Find the problems worth solving

    • Work directly with product teams across the Group to see where the current way of working costs time or quality. Watch real work for the clearest signals.
    • Turn findings into a prioritized set of hypotheses, each with a pre-agreed success condition.
    • Use AI tools to accelerate research, analysis, and prototyping in days rather than sprints.
  3. Build it, then prove it works

    • Prototype yourself—build a working version if it's faster than documenting.
    • Set success criteria with impacted teams before piloting; judge against these criteria.
    • Decide what "graduates"—many experiments, few become permanent. Graduate tools into platform services and scale across the company.
  4. Get it adopted and check that it lasts

    • Design the adoption path: onboarding, documentation, training, and timely internal communications.
    • Treat enablement as a product: users, quality bar, measurement.
    • Track adoption and output quality to decide next steps—both should improve.
  5. Work across every discipline in the lifecycle

    • Partner with Product Management, Engineering, Design, QA, BI, Marketing, Compliance, and Legal. Build a shared view of changes and team autonomy.
    • Give leadership a clear position on what AI can do now, what within a year, and the implications on immediate decisions.

Examples of Tools Used

  • General chat / generative AI: Claude, Gemini
  • Knowledge QA / research support: Notion AI, NotebookLM (document upload + Q&A)
  • Development support (code completion, coding agents, IDE): Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Devin, Codex, Gemini Code Assist
  • Workflow automation / AI app development (no-code / low-code): Zapier, n8n

Unique Challenges

  • Company-wide scope: Changes affect the daily work of hundreds across several businesses.
  • Hands-on approach: Prototyping is part of your job—use the latest tools yourself, often before others.
  • No existing playbook: No company has solved AI-native product development; you get to write and distribute the playbook for Mercari.
  • Transformation through product: New working methods are adopted because they’re clearly better; working demos travel faster than mandates.
  • Judgment for longevity: Most AI tools will be replaced within a year; some become company foundations. Spotting these early is a crucial challenge.
  • Broader discretion: Beyond data platforms and product dev, you’ll plan and push new customer experiences, enabling PdMs to focus on Discovery and Outcome.
