Department Overview The EC Business Data Analytics & Platform Section is part of the Business Support Development Department (BSD) within the Commerce & Marketing Company. It develops and operates a data platform that uses the large amount of data from Rakuten Ichiba, which is a main business of Rakuten Group. This section provides the following main services and functions to speed up Rakuten Ichiba's business growth using data and AI. It designs, builds, and operates a data warehouse (DWH) that brings together and stores many kinds of Rakuten Ichiba data. This provides a strong and scalable data base. It develops and operates data pipelines for real-time and batch processing. This makes data collection, processing, and connection automatic, providing a steady data supply. It develops data analysis, visualization, and reporting functions. This helps business intelligence (BI) and provides solutions that support fast and accurate decisions based on data. It uses machine learning and AI technology to develop and operate new AI solutions. These include predictive analysis, automation, customer behavior analysis, and AI agents, which create new business value. Position: Why We Hire We are looking for a new Engineering Manager to strengthen our organization. For this position, we are seeking someone who, as a manager, will oversee the entire development team (including DEV/PJM/PDM) in one of the system areas mentioned above. This person will also be responsible for creating and carrying out technical strategies, and ensuring the quality, cost, and delivery of products and projects in their assigned area.   Position Details As an Engineering Manager, you will perform the following tasks, focusing on development in a specific area among data platforms, data warehouses, data pipelines, data solutions, and AI solutions: - Manage the entire engineering team, including DEV/PJM (Project Manager)/PDM (Product Manager). This includes people management tasks such as setting goals, evaluating performance, developing skills, hiring, and onboarding. - Take final responsibility for Quality, Cost, and Delivery (QCD) in your assigned products and projects, and drive their achievement. - Create and carry out technical strategies based on product strategies and roadmaps, and plan development. - Lead technical responsibility and improvement activities across all development, including development processes, quality assurance, security, and performance. - Work with product managers and other departments to turn business needs into technical requirements and evaluate if they can be achieved. - Lead decisions about technology selection, architecture design, and system configuration. - Promote improving the team's technical skills, using best practices, and sharing knowledge. - Adjust project goals and guide the team to achieve the necessary level of quality. - Work with Cross PDM across the organization, and PDM, PJM, and engineers within your own team to control project scope, budget, and release timing. - Enable smooth communication among team members and provide timely updates to management on status, issues, risks, and performance.   Work Environment DEV/PJM (Project Manager)/PDM (Product Manager) work together to develop and operate the cross-business systems mentioned above. This position is important because it is responsible for the performance and QCD (Quality, Cost, Delivery) of the development organization in the area of data and AI. The technology used varies greatly depending on the area of responsibility. - Google Cloud Platform and Rakuten Group's private cloud infrastructure - BI solutions like Tableau - AI solutions using machine learning models and generative AI Our offices are in Tokyo, Osaka, and Sendai, so communication may be done remotely depending on the service.   Mandatory Qualifications: - Over 5 years of practical experience in software development. - Over 3 years of management experience as an Engineering Manager for development teams, including DEV/PJM (includes people management and organizational management). - Experience taking responsibility for and achieving QCD (Quality, Cost, Delivery) for products and projects. - Experience designing, developing, and operating data warehouses or data solutions. - Knowledge and practical experience with multiple programming languages. - Ability to translate business requirements into technical specifications and direct the team. - Excellent communication skills. - Experience reporting directly to executives and management. - Business-level proficiency or higher in both Japanese and English.   Desired Qualifications: - Experience in architecture design, performance tuning, and scalability improvement in large-scale systems. - Practical experience with Agile development methods (such as Scrum, Kanban). - Experience building and operating systems on cloud platforms (such as AWS, GCP, Azure). - Experience implementing AI/machine learning and data science related technologies into systems. - Knowledge and practical experience with DevOps and SRE. - Experience as a Scrum Master or Product Owner.
